Dandruff is the most widespread hair problem, with about 70% of the American population facing dandruff.

The shedding of skin is completely natural, and the skin on your scalp is no different. Every month the skin replenishes itself, and it is those dead cells that make up dandruff.

Everyone has these dead cells, but the normal amount is so small and insignificant. It only becomes a problem when these dead cells in the form of flakes suddenly increase.

So what causes an increase in dead cells?
There is still debate over the cause, but there are many contributing factors, including emotional and physical stress and weather. Most people find their dandruff growth increases during the winter months.

Many researchers believe an excessive increase of the yeast Pityrosporum Ovale, which is part of your skin makeup, is the cause of dandruff. The normal limit of Pityrosporum Ovale is 46%, and dandruff occurs when this increases up to the 74% mark.

How can I get rid of dandruff?
There are a huge number of anti-dandruff products on the market, so dandruff is not something you should worry about. There are many products and remedies, it is just a matter of finding one that works for you.

Stress management and a healthy lifestyle and diet will improve your scalp condition.

If your dandruff is mild, wash your hair regularly to remove the excess flakes. Use a medicated shampoo if more stubborn flakes.

Some people mistake build up from hair gel and hair styling products as dandruff.

Natural home remedies for Dandruff:

One of the best ways to control dandruff is to apply a mixture of vinegar and water to the scalp. The mixture is 2 teaspoons of vinegar and 6 teaspoons of water. Apply it on the scalp before you go to bed and keep it on for the whole night. Wrap a towel around your head. Rinse your head with vinegar water again the morning. Do this a few times a week.

Also try a mixture of 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of vinegar. Massage this solution into the scalp.

Other natural remedies to keep dandruff in check:

• 1 part sulfur powder, 2 parts surgical spirit, 1 part almond oil and 4 parts rose water, or distilled water. Rub on your scalp.
• Boil a mixture of 4-5 dried thyme and 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. When it has cooled, massage it on the scalp and leave for half an hour. Wash your hair normally afterwards.
• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 100 grams of withhazel, in 200ml of water. Use after washing hair, to help ward off dandruff.
• Wash your hair with warm apple cider vinegar. Leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse off with plain water. Do this regularly to stop the return of dandruff.
• Mix some olive oil and almond oil and massage into your scalp. Leave for 5 minutes then rinse.
