I'm a 22 year old male who has started losing his hair. Is this normal? My dad has a receded hair line, and a bald patch on top of his head, so I guess its hereditary. But why has it happened to me so young? Is there anything I can do to stop the hair loss? Do products like Rogaine actually work? I've been thinking of shaving my head so my thinning hair isn't so obvious. Please help! |

Unfortunately it sounds like you have inherited the gene for hair loss. Hair loss, commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness, occurs in a variety of forms in about two thirds of all adult males at some point throughout their lives. It generally affects the front and central areas of the scalp. The hairline recedes from the lateral sides of the forehead and a bald patch on top of the head may develop. Hairloss varies, according to the Norwood Hair Loss Scale. Unfortunately hair loss can start anytime after puberty, so 22 years old is not too young. But there are many hair treatment options available and the sooner you start, the better the chance of success. As for shaving your head, if you're wanting to shave to disguise your thinning hair, that's fine. But there's an old wives tale that shaving your hair can improve thinning hair - this is absolutely not true. So what are your hair loss treatment options? There have many great advancements in hair loss treatments and hair loss drugs in the last few years. If you don't mind taking strong medications, hair loss drugs such as Minoxidil (Rogaine) or Propecia might be right for you. Rogaine works in part by partially enlarging miniaturized follicles and reversing the miniaturization process. This prolongs the growth phase of the hair cycle, allowing the hair to become longer and thicker. You will need to use Rogaine for 2-4 months before seeing results, as your hair follicles would have been shrinking for a while. The Rogaine works inside your scalp to revitalize hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. This is why, if you're only just started losing your hair, the sooner you start using Rogaine the better the chance of success. Propecia works on the main cause of hair loss by significantly reducing the amount of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), by preventing the conversion of testosterone to DHT. DHT is believed to cause hair loss in those who are genetically disposed. DHT shrinks the hair follicle until it no longer grows visible hair. Propecia actually inhibits the formation of DHT in your scalp. Lowering DHT inhibits the further shrinking of affected hair follicles. Propecia re-grows visible hair and reduces further hair loss. In the longest hair loss clinical study where the results were measured by actual hair counts, in average more than 2 out of 3 men on Propecia re-grew hair. Where as, all men in the study who took the other pills lost hair. Propecia is intended for use BY MEN ONLY and should not be used by women. |
