I have dark brown hair which was recently highlighted. The highlights still seem to be light shades of brown or reddish, where as I wanted blonde highlights. What should I do, and what products should I buy to do it myself? |

When removing the natural pigment of dark hair (eg, bleaching it) it goes through several color changes - from black, to brown, to red, to orange, to yellow to white. By the sounds of it you didn't use a strong enough bleach or leave it on for long enough. It has lighten to a light brown/reddish color, but has stopped there.
Did you have your hair professionally highlighted, or did you do this yourself? If you had it done by a professional, then I am surprised they didn't lighten it further - if that is what you had asked for. Perhaps they thought it was best to do it in stages - to try and minimise hair damage. Either way, lightening your highlights should be easy enough to do. I would suggest going to a hairstylist for this. Bleach is a very strong chemical and if you're not familiar with hair dyeing, you could easily damage your hair. It's very easy to use the wrong strength peroxide or leave it on for too long. It would also be a bit difficult to highlight your own hair, unless you have a family member or friend who is nifty with hair dye to help you. But if you do have someone to give you a hand and you want to save a few dollars, you can get a home highlighting kit to do it yourself. Check out some of our favorite brands down the side of this page - L'Oreal and Revlon have a great selection of home highlight kits. |
