Everyone has moments where they just want a new haircut and they want it now... only they don't want to commit in case it looks weird, bad or just plain ridiculous. Luckily, there is a little thing called a "trompe l'oeil" hairstyle which creates a kind of optical illusion, allowing you to style your lock in such a way as to make them appear shorter! It's a little like hair-tuck trend Mullbery kickstarted recently, only these 'dos keep working when you take your jacket off!

Faux bobs and faux hawks (and any other hairstyles with "faux" in the title) count and, even better, they're all pretty simple to achieve. They also get bonus points for working with just about any hair texture you can think of.

No scissors!

If you have shoulder-length hair or longer, you can pretty much double your hairstyle repertoire by learning how to do a few trompe l'oeil looks.

How to fake a bob: A faux bob is so easy that, if you don't know how to do it already, you might be surprised you never just guessed. Gather your hair into a loose, low ponytail and secure with a hair elastic. Then, pull the elastic out gently, stopping an inch or so from the ends of your hair. Roll the elastic in towards the nape of your neck and secure with bobby pins. Use your hands to adjust where necessary - if the faux ends need fanning out a little, for example - and then fix with hairspray.

Top tip - Try this style after working in some relaxed waves with Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray for a more low-key look.

How to fake a half-hawk: Faux half-hawks are great because they create an edgy look without going near any hair clippers. All you have to do is define a deep side part and then flatten the smaller side against your head before securing with a few bobby pins, just underneath the rest of your hair, near the nape of your neck. You can twist or braid small sections of hair before your pin them flat against your head for a more intricate look.

Top tip - Rock some contrasting textures by curling the loose hair and smoothing over the "faux" part with Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Deconstructing Gum for a low-shine wet-effect.

It really is that easy to fake a short, edgy cut while you work out whether or not you're brave enough to try the real thing...
