Slightly more intricate and a whole lot more feminine than ponytails, braids certainly meet the purpose when we're looking for effortless hairstyles to wear to formal or social occasions. We sieved a whole bunch of swoon-worthy ideas from Instagram to round up three of the prettiest braided hairstyles, ideal for all textures of hair – straight, wavy and curly. Whether you're going for a job interview or on a date, each one of these braided hairstyles will fit your bill perfectly.
1/ Waterfall Braid
How beautiful is this loose braided hairstyle! Reminds us of those intricate braided hairstyles that we see on Game of Thrones, doesn't it? The good news is you can easily pull off this hairstyle at home!
Make a hair part; divide about 2 inches of face-framing hair closest to the part into three regular sections – left, right and center. Plait the sections once; to create a waterfall effect, let the braid section closest to your face (right side) fall loose. Take a new piece of hair from just above the let loose section to add to your braid. At the same time, keep adding thin pieces of hair to the left section of your braid, which is farthest from your face. Remember, every right section needs to be left loose after being plaited once.
Repeat the step until you've plaited a braid along your hairline, all the way to the back of your head. Secure your waterfall braid with bobby pins, and mist it with some hairspray to tame flyaways and complete the look!
3/ Upside Down French Braid Bun
We're sure that by now you must've mastered the art of French braiding. Now, for a little more intricate hairstyle – the upside down French braid bun. Don't let the name scare you; the updo is incredibly easy to create!
Flip your head and start French braiding your hair, taking about 2 inches of hair from the nape of your neck and adding in more hair pieces to the sides as you plait your way up to the crown of your head. When you reach the crown, gather the end of your braid as well as all your loose top hair and tie it up in a high ponytail, using elastic. Twist the ponytail around the base of the elastic and tuck in bobby pins as you go to create a bun. Spritz your updo with some hairspray to set the look for longer wear!
4/ Versatile Side Braid
This one's as easy as it can get! A simple yet elegant hairstyle, the side braid protects your strands, especially in this cold weather and lends you a pulled-together look. You can wear it neat or slightly tousled and pair it with bangs or with a headband to create a new hairstyle every day!
If you're working with day two hair, spritz some dry shampoo on your roots and comb your hair through to spread the product evenly throughout your mane. To create a mussed, romantic look, scrunch in a tiny amount of deconstructing gum through your tresses and lend added texture to your strands. Alternatively, mist your hair with some fine hold hairspray will lend a neat and smooth finish to your braided hairstyle.
