Season 7 of Mad Men is still a long way off (returning to AMC on April, 13th) but for anyone out there who has been frantically marathon-watching, or who just can't get enough of all the super chic, retro hairstyles in the show, we've got a treat for you. You see, we've been trawling New York Fashion Week for all the best looks and exciting new hair trends. However, we quickly realized that, sometimes, a retro classic is just as good as a hot new edgy style.
Take this sleek, 50's-inspired updo. We couldn't help thinking that Joan Harris wouldn't have looked out of place at the Erin Featherston Fall/Winter '14 presentation in New York City. It has everything to do with all the super-smooth, side-swept bangs the models were wearing... and the gorgeous, retro-inspired workwear!
If you're looking for a different way to style your hair for a day at the office, this could be it.
What you need:
Blowdryer
Comb
Bobby pins
Hair elastic
Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Volume Inject Mousse
Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Lift Creation Spray
Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray
Step one
Apply Volume Inject Mousse evenly to damp hair and blow-dry. While hair is still a little damp (so, about 80% dry), flip your head over and continue drying. Doing it upside down will help to add extra lift and volume.
Step two
Define a side part using a tail comb, then sweep the very front sections or hair forward. This includes bangs and a little extra hair to help fill out the look. Leave them loose while you work on the rest of your hair or clip them just above your hairline if that's easier.
Step three
On the top and crown of your head, apply Lift Creation Spray to your roots. With a comb, tease hair to build up volume. Don't tease too much, however, as you want this look to appear elegant an sophisticated.
Step four
Once you're happy with the amount of volume, gently smooth over the teased area by combing a small amount of the hair left loose at the front back over the rest. Then, secure the bouffant into place with bobby pins at the back - about 2/3 of the way down.
Smooth your bangs into place by tucking them back behind your ears and securing with bobby pins if necessary. For a really sleek finish, apply some hairspray to the palm of your hand and run it over your bangs.
Step five
Gather hair gently into a low ponytail and secure with a hair elastic. Take a strand of hair from the pony and wrap it around the elastic for an ultra-chic finish. Alternatively, twist the pony into a bun and secure with bobby pins.
Step six
Finish with a mist of Bold Control Hairspray to keep your new bouffant style in place all day long!
