Slicked back hairstyles are probably best reserved for dramatic night out looks, but when that night comes, make sure you really go for it because this kind of 'do requires an all-in attitude. If you don't believe us, check out L'Oreal Paris spokesperson Doutzen Kroes absolutely killing it on the red carpet with a slicked back hairstyle in the photo above.
The key? Confidence, combined with an excellent lipstick. There's a reason they call makeup warpaint after all!
How to wear slicked back hair
1/ Less (gel) is more
When creating a slicked back hairstyle, start with a quarter-sized amount of Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Clean Style Gel and add more as needed. You can always apply extra gel, but taking it out requires washing your hair and starting over.
For the most wearable slicked back 'do, use only the minimum amount of gel necessary to hold your hair in place and give your strands a slight sheen from the hairline through to the mid-lengths.
2/ Bold beauty
With all the hair held back off your face, you have plenty of room to make a bold beauty statement, be it with your eyes or your lips. While Doutzen opted for both, a more real-world friendly option is to choose one or the other for a balanced look.
3/ Simple dress
Because your hair and makeup are already doing most of the talking, stick to an understated outfit to keep the look chic. Avoid colors that clash with your lipstick, opting instead for a classic LBD or elegant monochrome ensemble.
