Retro hairstyles are really just hairstyles that were seriously popular in the past and have either remained that way or simply worked their way back into popular hairstyle consciousness once again. This kind of doubles up their desirability and makes retro 'dos among the most sought after on the planet... after the Duchess of Cambridge's perfect blow-dry, of course.
If you're totally happy teasing, curling and accessorizing your locks for hours on end to get the old-school look you really want, that's fine. However, there is an another way to create a retro look that can be achieved before you can say Dusty Springfield: a deep side part.
With some careful styling (read: super easy,) a deep side part can transform your hairstyle from regular to retro chic and maybe even surprise you with how simple it can be to actually do.
Get the look
The thing to bear in mind when working on a side part is getting it to stay in place. With a lot of shoulder-length or longer cut, it can often be a case of flipping hair over to the desired side and fixing with a little hairspray and some bobby pins if necessary.
If you have hair that is a little less well-behaved (don't worry, you're not alone!) then you'll need to style your side part into position. Start by defining the part when hair is still damp and then blow-dry using a sleek styling cream such as Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream. This will give your hair a smooth, straight finish with added shine. Fix with a little LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray and you're good to go!
Top tip: Team with graphic eyeliner for a truly Twiggy-esque look.
