Braids featured prominently on the Fashion Week runways this season – right from New York to Paris. We saw a delightful bevy of braided hairstyles at the Spring/Summer 2016 shows of Gucci, Céline, Hérve Léger, LC Lauren Conrad, Alice + Olivia, Degen and several other fashion power houses! From low, long plaits to braided buns and from schoolgirl pigtails to wraparound updos, we've got plenty of inspiration to last us the entire season!
The Skinny Side Braid: Gucci
Time: 2-5 minutes.
If you have shoulder-length to long hair, create a gentle side part and gather all your tresses at the nape of your neck, slightly off the center. Plait it into a tight braid all the way down to the end and secure it with an elastic. Gently tug at the face framing section of your hair to create a slightly messy look and pin up flyways using bobby pins.
Alternative Styles: Wrap your side braid across your hairline and secure the end behind your ear using bobby pins to create a braided headband as seen at LC Lauren's Conrad's show.
You can also sweep your side braid over your forehead and pin it up on the side of your head to replicate the bohemian wraparound braided updos from the Hérve Léger show.
Power Braid: Céline
Time: 5 minutes.
Uber-neat and sexy power braids as seen at the Celine Spring 2016 show, are all about sleekness and control! They are perfect for the office or for sports and very easy to create.
To make a power braid, work in a small amount of styling gel through your hair to detangle knots and make your tresses ultra-shiny. Using a fine toothed-comb, brush your hair backwards and gather it in a semi-high ponytail at the back of your head; secure it with a hair elastic. Plait your ponytail tightly to make a firm braid and secure the end with elastic. Spritz some fine-hold hairspray on your hair to tame flyways and lend your hairstyle an extra smooth finish.
Braided Chignon: Suno
Time: 5-7 minutes
Creating this sophisticated runway-inspired hairstyle is easier than it looks! Spritz your straight or wavy hair generously with high-lift creation hairspray. This will boost your hair instantly and make it look voluminous. Gather your tresses at the back of your head, make a tight braid and secure it with elastic. Roll under the end of your braid and secure it using bobby pins. Mist your braided chignon with a generous spritz of hairspray to set it for longer wear.
Alternative style: If you have long hair and want to go for something a tad more intricate, trade the regular braid with a loose French braid (as shown in the image above) and follow the rest of the steps to create an elegant wrapped-up braided updo as seen at J. Mendel's show!
