How to get the haircut you want at the salon

Get the cut you really want!

Walking into the salon for a new haircut is intimidating on several different levels. Firstly, changing your style is a big deal, so it's totally normal to be a little nervous. Secondly, a salon can feel like a weird, other-worldly environment if you haven't been to one in a while. On top of all that, explaining exactly what it is that you want can be quite hard if you aren't sure about how to ask for it.

To make sure your next cut is plain sailing, we've got the lowdown on exactly how to get the haircut of your dreams!

Be yourself

Tempting though it is to polish up your regular hairstyle for a salon appointment, don't. It's important for your stylist to have a good idea of what you do with your hair on a day-to-day basis, as well as your overall look, so they can give you a cut that works with your personal style.

No, really be yourself...

Be honest about how much styling you want to do, if any, and what kind of routine you need your new cut to fit into. So, if you're all about the air-dry, let them know. That way, you won't end up with a cut that requires a 30 minute blowout every morning.

Be a 'glass half full' person

Focus on what you want your hair to look like, and try not to get bogged down in all the things you don't want. Being negative from the start might make your stylist defensive, while staying upbeat lets them know that you trust their judgement... even if it feels a little scary.

Get clarification

If you aren't really sure about the real meaning of the terms your stylist is using, get them to elaborate. Ask them where any layers and/or bangs will fall to, and politely request a demonstration of exactly what they mean when they talk in precise measurements. Everyone has a different idea of what "a couple of inches" actually means, so make sure you're both on the same page.

Follow up

If you can't recreate the exact same look you leave the salon with at home, schedule a follow-up appointment. Explain what you're struggling with, then ask your stylist to walk you through the technique.
