Sometimes, you just don't have time to air-dry your hair but walking in to work or school with wet shoulders won't earn you any style points, either! So before you start waking up an hour early to let your hairdo dry au naturel, check out this easy, non-damaging blow-dry tutorial!
Preparation is crucial
In order to make sure that your hair is protected from the damage blow-drying can cause, it's essential to prep your hair correctly. First, using a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed to lock-in moisture will help protect your hair during the drying process. After washing your hair, blot it with a towel-but don't rub hard as this can cause damage to the hair shaft. Once the hair isn't dripping anymore, products such as L'Oreal's Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Blow Out Heatspray or SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream should be applied from root to tip, in order to ensure maximum protection.
Enhance your drying technique
Rather than drying all of your hair at once, quickly separate it into several vertical sections from the "inside" layer to the topmost layer (three is fine). Once you get the dryer going, it's usually safest to keep it on medium heat, maintaining a few inches' distance from your head at all times. If your scalp becomes uncomfortably warm, you're too close.
Start with the bottom layer and keep the dryer moving as you work from root to tip. You can clip the rest of your hair up out of the way if this makes things easier.
Try to keep the airflow pointed down to encourage a super straight finish. Do this for all of the sections, letting them down one-by-one. Use a gentle soft brush or your fingers to keep your hair de-tangled while drying and to add shine. When you're nearing dryness, stop just a few minutes early. If you have time, air-dry the final five minutes or so to avoid over-heating your tresses.
It's not impossible to get salon-grade blow-dried hair with a little practice, and it's easy to finish off the look with a post-drying spray like Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Strand Smoother Serum Spray for a positively runway look.
