Highlights and ombré hair are very similar. Both add dimension to the overall hair color, and both are often used to create a lightened, or sunkissed, effect. The question is, should you go for ombé locks or highlighted tresses?
Ombré hair
If you want a gradual lightening towards the ends of your hair, ombré is the way to go. With the fadeout beginning somewhere around ear level, this style features noticeably darker roots with distinctly sunnier ends. It's the perfect way to test a new color as you only need to sacrifice some of your strands, as opposed to your entire mane. Ombré hair also gets extra kudos for creating the perfect pastel or rainbow hair canvas!
Styling tip
Ombré ends are super vulnerable to heat damage, so make sure you always apply a thermal protectant like Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray before styling.
Highlights
Highlights tend to be more subtle than ombré hair with more of an all-over lightening effect. By definition, highlights are always lighter than the base color, whether by one shade or ten. The closer you stay to the base hue, however, the more natural the result will be.
Styling tip
To showcase the depth of color highlights bring to your hair, try adding some loose waves. The curves will help your strands to catch the light in all the right places while adding extra movement throughout.
