Wet look or slicked back hairstyles can be a little intimidating for anyone who has never tried one before- it's all about making your hair look dirty deliberately, which is intensely counterintuitive (i.e. makes no sense). However, not all slick hairstyles were created equal and there are a few that actually look pretty cool with some sultry night out makeup.
To show you exactly what we mean, and perhaps inspire you to venture beyond your party hairstyle comfort zone, check out three of our fave slick styles below!
1. Liya Kebede's slick center part
If you find the general goopiness of wet look hair off-putting, try a more subtle approach like model Liya Kebede. Her low-shine middle parted hairstyle is polished to perfection and totally frizz-proof. It'll look dressed-up all night long, and it won't succumb to any dancefloor humidity.
If using gel is so not your jam, try smoothing your hair down with a small amount of flexible hold, matte putty instead.
2. Half-up, half-down
If slicked back cool appeals, but you don't feel like sacrificing all of your hair to the look, try a half-up style! You can gloss over the hair from your hairline to the crown of your head, twist and pin a couple of pieces back, then leave the lengths wild and free.
Start with a dime-sized amount of gel, then add more as needed- you only need the bare minimum for this hairstyle!
3. Slick volume
Wet look hair doesn't have to be flattened onto your head. In fact, the holding powers of a decent gel makes it perfect for building height that lasts! Start by applying get to the roots, then massage them with your fingertips to add lift. When you're happy with the height, Use some more gel to smooth your hair back.
Use a strong hold gel for a hairstyle you can set and forget.
