Which low knot will you try first?

Like a topknot, a low knot is an essential, not to mention versatile, hairstyle to have in your repertoire. It can be worn in several different ways from an elegant chignon to a casual, deconstructed look, depending on how you want your hair to look. Whether you have a wedding to attend, a night out planned or even a job interview in the near future, a low knot or chignon is the perfect go-to style.

It looks great with or without accessories and is a gorgeous look for those times when you want your hair up and out of the way. It's also a great hairdo if you want to protect your hair during a workout and don't want to wash your hair afterwards. You can also sleep on it to protect a blowout for days two, three and a beyond, too.

Below are three different ways to wear the low knot with tutorials for each one to help you recreate the look. All you need to do is scroll through and decide which one to try first!

Messy braided chignon

If you tend to shy away from the neat and tidy, a deliberately disheveled look - or one that hasn't been forced into sleek submission - could be just right for you. The braid adds extra detail to the style and the mussed bed head texture creates soft lines that are sure to look good on pretty much everyone!

If you don't have time to wash your hair, spray the roots with dry shampoo and brush it through. If you do, apply L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Volume Inject Mousse to damp hair and rough blow-dry. Create a part on one side and tease the hair with a fine-tooth comb to build volume.

Loosely French braid a chunk of hair on one side, adding more hair as you work your way around the side and back of your head. Braid the hair to the ends then wrap it around into a bun at the nape of your neck. Pin it to one side and finish with a mist of Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray.

Easy chic

For those of you who believe that effortless-looking beauty really should be effortless, we've got the perfect low bun for you. With a lot of muss and approximately zero fuss, this undone look can be dressed up or down for any occasion (with little more than a bold lipstick) and is another 'do that looks great on everyone and anyone.

Spray dry hair with Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray and pin it up into two loose buns à la Princess Leia. Leave them to air dry - or sleep on them - if time permits, if not, give them a blast with your blow-dryer. Shake out your hair and tease with a fine-tooth comb to add more texture. Gather your hair at the nape of your neck and pin it into a loose, low bun. Gently pull a few pieces loose to further dishevel the look then spray liberally with LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray for long-lasting hold and added shine.

Classic low bun

The purists among you might appreciate this third and final look: the classic low bun. Not wildly dissimilar to the higher ballerina bun, this style is a basic staple and one that we should have down pat! It's perfect for the office but won't look too uptight if you go for a few after work drinks either.

Starting with freshly washed damp hair, apply Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream evenly throughout then blow-dry using a paddle brush. Make sure the cream is evenly distributed as it protects the hair from heat and smooths the cuticle while each strand dries. Once dried, spray all over with Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT High Lift Creation Spray and ruffle with your hands. Smooth it back off your face and tie into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Loosely twist the pony and pin to the back of your head in a bun shape. Use your hands to further muss the style then finish with a mist of LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray.
