The holiday season can wreak havoc on our hair. Frequent family gatherings, parties and celebrations require heavy-duty hairstyling, which wears our hair out to a frazzle by New Year 's Eve. The cold weather adds fuel to the fire, making our strands dry and damaged. If you start caring for your precious tresses now, you can save them (and yourself) a lot of trouble later. Here are a few tips on how to prep your hair for the holiday season:
1/ Hydration is key
As with your body, hydration is very important for your hair too, especially ahead of the holiday season. Apart from eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water, it is important to use a moisturizing shampoo to make your tresses super-soft and healthy, so that you can try out a variety of hairstyles without parching your strands out.
However, don't shampoo your hair too often. Your scalp does not get as dirty during the colder months as it does in summer, so you can wash your hair every 3 days. If your roots look greasy, just spritz some dry shampoo over them to make them look clean and fresh.
Finally, avoid heat styling completely. Allow your hair to air dry and wear hairstyles that do not require you to use your blow-dryer, flat iron or curling iron.
These little things will go a long way in making your hair soft, supple and ready to shine during the holiday season!
2/ Color protect
Water is hair color's worst enemy. Colored hair is extremely porous; it absorbs and releases water very quickly – that explains why your hair color runs out in the shower! The more you wash your hair, the sooner you send your hair color down the drain.
If you want your hair color to look fresh and vibrant during the holiday season, wash your hair less frequently and avoid excessive rinsing. Shampoo your tresses with lukewarm or cold water. Heat strips the color off your strands, causing your dye to fade away very quickly, so the hotter the water, the quicker your color goes!
Most importantly, use color protect shampoo and conditioner with special protective agents to make your colored hair look vibrant and prevent the dye from fading.
3/ Good old fashioned pamper
A little TLC never hurt anyone! If you want your hair to behave during the holidays, you have to pamper and protect it in advance. Massage your roots with some restorative hair oil and replenish your mane with a damage erasing hair balm mask at least once a week. Not only will your hair regain its strength and shine but will also look fabulous during the holidays!
Remember, it is that time of the year when you relax, but your hair is overtaxed. Whether your hair is short or long, straight, wavy or curly, thick or fine, a little pamper and precaution in advance will make a big impact later!
