During the summer, the heat and an ironically burning desire to keep our cool can make us do some crazy things, like getting a radically short haircut! While this approach isn't recommended when choosing a new hairstyle, there are some short haircuts that you won't regret come fall, as long as you give yourself time to weigh up your options before hitting the salon.
Check out some of our favorites below!
1. Short layered hair
Short layers create a full bodied look that, with a little help from dry shampoo, will remain light and airy throughout the summer, even on the hottest days! Whether you want something chin-grazing or shoulder-length, layers can work wonders- see Karlie Kloss for further details.
For an undone, beachy look, scrunch some texturizing spray like Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray into damp hair and let it air dry naturally.
2. Long sideswept pixie cut
A long pixie with sideswept bangs frames the face beautifully and totally eliminates the hair on the neck issue. The fringe is long enough to be pinned back on those hot midsummer days where having anything on your face is impossible, and if you decide to grow it out, you won't have to be quite as patient as you would with shorter bangs.
Keep your pixie frizz-free by applying a smoothing product like Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream to damp hair before blow-drying. Then, dry the hair on a medium heat, pointing the airflow in the direction you want the hair to fall.
3. Swept-back bob
For a fresh summer look, try a swept-back bob. It's perfect for keeping the hair off the face and it just looks so clean and cool- even if the person wearing it is secretly melting. When fall arrives, try switching up the part or maybe even get some bangs cut in to update the look for the new season.
Use a small amount of regular strength gel such as Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Clean Style Gel to push the hair back. You don't need much, so start with a dime-sized amount and add more as needed.
4. Short bob with peekaboo bangs
If you can handle the amount of styling required to keep bangs looking awesome during the summer, but just don't want to deal with everything else, a short bob with peekaboo bangs could be right up your street. It's cute and edgy at the same time, and you can create a piecey texture for a slightly beachier look.
Use a tiny amount of matte product like Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Deconstructing Gum to create an undone, slightly tousled finish.
5. Freida Pinto's beachy bob
Even if you live hours away from the nearest beach, channel your inner surfer girl with a tousled, beachy bob like Freida Pinto's. The texture is almost wavy but not quite, and those subtle highlights add plenty of depth to the look.
Apply a texturizing heat protectant to damp hair, then blow-dry your hair in loosely twisted sections to create that undone, almost wavy finish. When you're done, scrunch some matte gum through the ends to add more texture.
6. Short, voluminous pomp
If you just can't handle long hair in the heat, or medium-length hair for that matter, you really don't have to thanks to short cuts like this voluminous pomp hairstyle. The height, the texture and the overall silhouette create a reimagined teddy boy look that's effortlessly cool, not to mention full of personality. If you want to do something bold with your hair this summer, we can't recommend this look enough!
To get volume and height that last throughout the day, regardless of humidity levels, use a dime-sized amount of strong hold gel to keep your locks in place.
7. Classic side parted pixie
A classic pixie cut parted on one side is a timeless short hairstyle that always looks gorgeous, whatever the season. It's practical during the summer months, and when temperatures start to cool off, it creates the perfect excuse to invest in some great scarves!
To keep all of your hair right where you want it, warm a small amount of flexible hold product like Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Deconstructing Gum in your palms, then shape your hair with your hands.
8. Ultra-short pixie cut
This is definitely a haircut you need to be 100% sure about, but we think it's just so impossibly cool! It's the ultimate effortless look, and it'll save you a ton of time and money when it comes to styling and general maintenance. Plus, growing it into a pixie won't take long at all if you decide you want a bit more length.
Use some matte gum to add texture all over, just make sure you apply it sparingly to avoid overloading your hair.
9. Soo Joo Park's layered bob
We can't get enough of layered hair, and Soo Joo Park's platinum blonde style does a great job of explaining why. It looks great with a polished blowout for special occasions, it can handle just about every texture, and it has enough length for the occasional short hair updo!
Speed up your blowout by priming your hair first. Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Quick Dry Primer Spray reacts to the heat from your dryer to significantly reduce drying time. Apply it to damp hair, rough-dry your locks until they're only slightly damp, then start the brush work.
10. Short bob with blunt baby bangs
If getting your hair off your neck is the main priority, but you're totally ok with spending some time styling each day, a short bob with blunt baby bangs is a haircut to think about. It's edgy yet classic at the same time and it'll showcase a killer makeup look beautifully!
Prevent frizz by sealing your hair against the elements with a finishing spray like Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray. It creates a barrier that protects your strands from any frizz-triggering humidity in the air.
11. Shoulder-length wavy bob
The wavy bob is basically THE hairstyle of the moment, and it won't be surrendering its trend status any time soon. It looks great on everyone, and you can play around with the part when you want to change it up a bit.
Try switching your regular blowout for rough drying to give your hair a more textured, natural-looking finish.
12. Choppy pixie cut
However long you decide to wear it, a choppy pixie cut looks stunning with a messy, windswept finish. Both chaotic and controlled, this kind of styling is the perfect way to celebrate a new short haircut. After all, if you've got it, flaunt it!
Use a flexible hold gum or putty when styling. Products that don't set hard allow you to restyle and reshape the hair throughout the day should you need or want to do so.
13. Middle parted blunt bob
A minimalist blunt bob with a middle part will look effortlessly cool throughout the summer, even if that's the opposite of how you actually feel. Then, come fall, you can change the color, switch up the part, or change the texture for a new yet equally cool look for the colder months ahead.
Use a tail comb when parting your hair to get the most accurate line, then brush your hair through on both sides to fix it in place.
14. Long, side parted pixie crop
Not quite a bob, not quite a regular pixie either, this side parted hairstyle is ultra-chic. The length of the bangs makes them really versatile, so you can wear them to one side, part them in the middle if you prefer, or sweep them back.
Give your hair a glossy sheen with a finishing spray like Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Strand Smoother Serum Spray. It adds shine and eliminates existing flyaways for a really polished look.
15. Jennifer Lopez's vintage bob
Jennifer Lopez recently swapped her trademark long locks for a much shorter bob haircut. Styled with some vintage curls, this hairstyle is timeless! It's a really glamorous look, but you can tone it down with more fresh faced makeup, or opt for looser curls instead.
To make sure your curls don't fall flat during the day, clip each one up to cool as soon as you take it off the curling iron so it sets properly.
16. Piecey sideswept hair
Piecey, tousled hair is a summer staple, and it's oh so easy to wear with a sideswept hairstyle. This carefree 'do looks good on just about anyone, and it works best with second day hair, which is the perfect excuse to skip the shampoo and spend a few more minutes in bed in the morning!
Use a dry shampoo like Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Longwear Spray to absorb excess oil and lift hair at the root. After applying it, give the formula enough time to work - five to ten minutes - then brush it out.
17. Wavy bob
For an easy wash and go look for summer - depending on your hair's natural texture of course - it doesn't get much better than a short, wavy bob. This perennial hairstyle is really easy to wear as you don't really need to do anything to it, whatever the occasion!
Use a 1" curling iron to create a few large waves, then brush them through when you're done to get a smooth, polished look that'll take you everywhere.
