During the summer, it can be a whole lot easier to ditch your bangs and bare your forehead for all the world to see. A combination of warm weather, sweat and humidity can make keeping a fringe in place a lot harder than it is the rest of the year, unless you're prepared to devote some extra time to styling. The good news is, there are a lot of hairstyles sans bangs that look gorgeous on any face shape, and many of them can be used to hide your existing fringe.
Check out some of our favorite fringeless looks in the list below.
1. Center parted waves
Loose waves are a summer staple, and they do just as good a job of framing your face as long, textured bangs do. This hairstyle is effortlessly pretty without looking messy and it's very easy to recreate with a 1 ½" curling iron and plenty of hairspray.
To get a subtly tousled finish, mist your hair with a texturizing heat protectant like Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray before curling.
2. Sleek side ponytail
As Freida Pinto proves, a sleek side ponytail is the ultimate summer hairstyle to help you keep your cool - even if you only look like you're cool but really feel like you're going to melt at any second. Any existing bangs can be combined with the hair on the biggest side of the part and held in place with a lot of hairspray or a small amount of gel.
To tame any flyaways after securing your pony, take an old toothbrush and mist it with a strong hold finishing spray like Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray. Smooth it over the flyaways to tack them down once and for all.
3. Messy headband updo
If you have fairly short bangs and aren't quite sure how to keep them out of the way, try a headband updo. Use the headband to keep the fringe secured off your face, then gather the rest of your hair into a messy knot at the back of your head.
To keep a stretchy headband in place, spray both your hair and your bobby pins with dry shampoo before putting it on, then use a couple of the pins to hold the headband in place at the sides.
4. Long side braid
If you're fairly good at braiding, or have a friend who is, try French braiding your bangs into a long side braid hairstyle, using pins to tack down any pieces that fall out as you go. This hairstyle also gets some bonus points for protecting your entire mane against humidity, too!
When you're practicing your braid technique, do so with dirty hair. The natural oils give the strands more grip which makes the whole process much easier.
While it may seem like the easy option, a topknot hairstyle is completely indispensable when temperatures are soaring and all you want to do is get your hair up and off your neck. With a high shine finish and a few accessories, you can dress it up for any formal situations, or you can pare it down with a messy, tousled finish - it's (quite literally) all up to you!
Add shine to your finished look and calm any unwanted flyaways with a smoothing finishing spray like Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Strand Smoother Serum Spray.
6. Sleek center part
If you're not afraid to take a few risks with your hairstyle, try a sleek wet-look center part this summer. A small amount of gel will give your hair a subtle sheen while simultaneously keeping your bangs pushed back and firmly under control. Not only is wet-look hair kind of cool in a daring, edgy way, it also seals every strand against the atmosphere, meaning frizz will never be an issue with this kind of style!
Start with just a small amount of regular strength gel, then add more as needed. You can always add more but it's impossible to take gel out of your hair without washing it and starting over.
7. Braided updo
Braided updo hairstyles are a really pretty way to keep long hair up and under control without compromising on style. You can go for some French braided buns like the model above, or you can keep it simple by braiding a ponytail and pinning it into a bun afterward.
Again, this style works best with dirty hair. Spritz your roots with a dry shampoo such as Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Longwear Spray and brush it out before starting. Not only will this remove any telltale signs of greasiness, it'll also help the hair to bind together more easily which is really handy when braiding.
8. Fishtail braided crown
For a detailed updo that doesn't come off as try hard, a fishtail braided crown is the perfect option. It's really just two fishtail braided pigtails wrapped around the head and held in place with bobby pins - think of this hairstyle as milkmaid braids with a more detailed, herringbone look.
Secure the pigtails low behind each ear before braiding. The tie will help to keep the hair in one place while you braid it which will make it easier to keep track of the various pieces you're working with.
9. Braided faux half hawk
An edgier way to wear loose waves, this braided faux half hawk is the perfect cool girl summer hairstyle and the deep side part is a great alternative to bangs. You can wear it wavy, curly or straight, and when you feel like changing things up a bit, you can pin it into a low side bun on the opposite side to the braid.
For waves that won't fall flat, make sure you clip each curled piece of hair up to cool. This will set the strands into waves that last, especially if you finish with plenty of strong hold hairspray after styling.
10. Long textured braid
If you just can't get the better of humidity, pretend it's doing you a favor by styling a textured, messy braid. Any frizz will contribute volume to the look - especially firzzy bangs - as well as a soft, flattering silhouette. While you shouldn't braid the hair too tightly, you may find it easiest to loosen the style after securing it.
Use a volumizing hairspray such as Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT High Lift Creation Spray to add extra height on top. Depending on the thickness and texture of your hair, you can use your hands to massage the roots to build height, or a tease the hair in sections with a fine-tooth comb.
11. Mid-height ponytail
Sometimes there's nothing like falling back on a reliable old hairstyle that has proven itself time and time again. A mid-height ponytail is like a childhood friend - always there when you need it and very comforting to revisit every now and then (or every day...)
To prevent your pony from falling flat at the back, prop it up with a couple of bobby pins after tying it in place and to make it appear longer, stack two ponytails on top of each other.
12. Low pigtail braids
When you don't have a lot of time to style your hair but you need to keep the lengths in check, try some pigtail braids. Perhaps surprisingly, they can actually look great on grownups with the right placement - so keep them low and chic to avoid that swinging middle schooler look pigtails are generally known for. You can pin your bangs out of the way at the sides or secure them with barrettes.
To make a regular three strand braid a bit more interesting, keep one of the three pieces much smaller than the other two. This will create an uneven, seemingly complicated braid that isn't complicated at all!
13. Messy waves with a headband
As we've already mentioned, wavy hair is an essential summer hairstyle, and we think it looks especially pretty with a cute, floral headband to offset the airy texture. With a voluminous, full-bodied finish, this hairstyle has a carefree, hippie vibe that's irresistible for sunny days and balmy nights. As with a headband updo, you can tuck your bangs under the headband to keep them totally under control.
Use a 1 ½" curling iron to make waves throughout, then spray your hair all over with hairspray. After that, gently backcomb the hair, focusing on the lower layers in order to create some extra volume and a lightweight, almost fluffy texture.
14. Ballerina bun
For a classic chic look, you can always rely on a ballerina bun. It's a no fuss updo that absolutely anyone can style, and it does a great job of keeping long and medium length hair under control when it's a bajillion degrees out.
To combine your fringe with the rest of your hair, all you need to do is spray a paddle brush generously with hairspray and use it to push your bangs off your face. Repeat as many times as necessary until your bangs stay mostly in place by themselves, then use bobby pins to clandestinely secure them on top of your head.
15. Effortlessly tousled waves
L'Oréal Paris spokesperson Blake Lively is basically the queen of long, tousled hair and her textured bang-free locks make for the perfect summer hairstyle. There's texture, there's movement, there's a distinct lack of frizz... what's not to love about this look?
The lazy girls among you will be happy to know that this style is really easy to recreate. All you need to do is apply a texturizing spray to slightly damp hair, pin it into a bun, and leave it to dry. Then, shake it all out, brush it through and flip it all over one shoulder. To polish it up a little more, you can also use a 1" curling iron around the front.
16. Polished side braid
For an understated, polished summer hairstyle that will hide your bangs, try a smooth side braid. The headband is completely optional but it makes keeping a fringe out of the way just a little bit easier.
Before blowdrying your hair, apply a smoothing heat protectant such as Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream throughout to smooth the cuticle and prevent frizz from forming.
