Changing up our hairstyles in time for fall is definitely one of our mane-related obsessions right now. Labor Day is right around the corner, after all, and there's no better time to get a new look than the beginning of a new season! If you, too, are contemplating a new haircut and want something that will get you noticed, check out the edgy 'dos below! Who knows, one of them could be your new signature look...
1. Slicked back bob
A bob hairstyle in itself isn't really that edgy these days, despite it's rebellious, flapper girl beginnings. However, this classic short haircut is impressively versatile and looks oh so cool with an effortlessly slicked back finish. Sweeping some gel through your hair is a great way to hide dirty roots in plain sight, too!
When applying hair gel, start with a small, roughly dime-sized amount and add more as needed. It's impossible to remove the gel without washing it out, should you accidentally apply too much.
2. Soo Joo Park's rainbow highlights
Rainbow hair is definitely one of the most fun hair trends you can try. You can stick to colorful highlights like model Soo Joo Park or opt for a vibrant roots-to-ends look instead if you want something more intense.
Rainbow hair looks really pretty with mermaid waves. To get the look, spritz your mane with a heat protectant, then use a large barrel curling iron to curl the lengths of your hair. To make sure the waves set properly, clip each piece of hair up to cool, then shake it all out when you're done and finish with hairspray.
3. Short layered bob
A really short bob with a few subtly blended layers is cropped enough to be interesting but longer than a pixie. The layers can be tailored to work with all face shapes, and the little flick at the ends is so cute! This bob is also ideal for anyone who wants a short haircut but isn't necessarily down for a full-on pixie.
To get a smooth finish, apply a smoothing cream to damp hair before blow-drying it, or leaving it to air dry.
4. Doutzen Kroes' darker roots
Not quite ombré hair, Doutzen Kroes' slightly darker roots are the ultimate cool girl hairstyle! Whether you don't have time for a lengthy salon sesh, can't decide on your next color move, or just kind of like the worn-in vibes a little root growth adds to your look, there's no reason you shouldn't keep it for fall!
If your roots are darker than Doutzen's, soften the contrast with the lighter color by adding a few highlights to blur the line of demarcation.
5. Grey hair
Possibly the most interesting color trend of the year so far, grey hair is definitely a look to consider this autumn. The iciness of this look is almost too perfect for winter, plus a silver #GrannyHair hue is a great way to update an existing platinum shade because the stressful (for your hair) bleaching process has already been done!
Maintain grey hair with toning shampoos and conditioners between color touch-ups.
6. Voluminous wavy pomp
With closely cropped sides and a ton of height on top, this textured pomp hairstyle is a stand-out look with an unforgettable silhouette. It has both volume and contrast in spades, and we love the vintage flair in front!
Use a flexible hold, matte product to keep your hair in place instead of a gel because it won't set hard and you can reshape as desired throughout the day. As always, start with a small amount of product and add more as needed to avoid over-applying.
7. Short bob with baby bangs
If you like your short hairstyles with a generous side order of geometry, this jaw-grazing bob and cropped baby bangs might be right up your alley. While the amount of styling time depends mainly on the natural texture of your hair, we think the results are absolutely worth the commitment!
To keep a super short fringe in check, invest in a mini-flat iron. It's the fastest, easiest way to tame unruly bangs, just don't forget to apply a heat protectant beforehand!
8. Long platinum hair
Platinum is a hair color trend in its prime. While it involves the kind of stress your strands will only be able to tolerate for so long, it's a striking look and the perfect way to brighten up the colder days ahead.
Bleaching your hair as part of the platinum process severely dries out your hair, so keep it well-hydrated with regular and leave-in conditioners, and make time in your weekly routine for a deep conditioning hair mask, too.
9. Choppy pixie cut
Whatever hair color you choose, a choppy pixie cut with a messy finish is an edgy yet versatile short hair option, whatever the season. It won't get tangled by a scarf and if you leave enough length on top, there are plenty of styling possibilities, too, from slicked back styles to voluminous pomps.
When styling a choppy pixie with a messy finish, use a flexible hold product so you can rearrange and reshape your style on the go.
10. Faux half-hawk
Half-hawks can be ridiculously cool, but the reality of buzzing half of one's hair clean off is not something everybody can get on board with. Instead, keep your long locks this fall and cheat your way to a half-hawkdom by braiding the hair on one side to create an edgy, asymmetrical look.
If your braiding skills are a little rusty, you can twist and pin the hair flat against your head in two or three sections instead.
11. Short, side parted bob
Another bob cut, this short side parted style is more polished than edgy, but it is undeniably cool. It's the kind of "come as you are" hairstyle that doesn't require a great deal of styling for any occasion, especially when worn with platinum strands!
Blow-dry your hair into position after parting it when it's still damp. Keep the airflow pointing down, and use the concentrator attachment to reduce frizz.
12. Choppy asymmetrical bangs
If you're thinking about getting bangs, consider a slightly asymmetrical cut. Less predictable than a regular blunt cut or feathered fringe, this look frames the face a little differently, drawing attention to the eyes and leaving some room for added texture.
Add texture to your bangs by scrunching in a small amount of matte gum. Apply only the bare minimum to avoid unnecessary buildup.
13. Short, windswept pixie cut
A pixie cut with a windswept finish is an undone hairstyle that still conveys a certain amount of styling effort. It's a bedhead look for the outside world, and one you can dress up with some polished makeup for a formal occasion, too!
When recreating this hairstyle, start by rough-drying the hair on a medium heat. After applying a texturizing heat protectant, whip the hair around with your dryer, using your hands to guide it instead of a brush or comb. This will add texture before you apply any holding product.
14. Long, messy bedhead hair
Essentially the longhaired version of the pixie cut above, this messy bedhead look is perfect for the weekend! It's full of texture and volume thanks to a few subtle layers, and it works beautifully with second day or post-party hair when you just don't have time to shampoo.
Between washes, use dry shampoo to lift the hair at the root and add texture through the lengths of your hair. It isn't only a cleansing product you know!
15. Long bronde waves
Bronde is probably THE hair color of the moment, and we think it's perfect for fall. It's a rich, sun kissed look that will keep the spirit of summer alive, but with more of a downtown 'It' girl vibe than a sunny surfer girl 'do.
Spritz your hair with a heat protectant and loosely curl it with a large barrel curling iron to make big, tumbling waves. When you're done, shake your fingers through the lengths of your hair and finish with hairspray.
