There are several reasons why we love updos. They look great on all women in some form or the other. They literally keep hair off our backs and free us from the bother of managing our tresses, especially on busy days!
Most updos require you to have at least shoulder-length hair. The longer your hair, the more voluminous your hairstyle will be! The best thing is that you can create an updo hairstyle with straight, wavy or curly hair and even pair it with bangs to sport an on trend style!
Take a look at the following updos that you can wear anywhere:
1. Low Bun
Seen frequently on red carpets and glamour events, this sleek updo works best with medium-length hair. Work in some high-shine styling gel through the length of your tresses to achieve a polished, glossy finish. Tuck in an ornate hair pin or a floral hair accessory to glamorize this hairdo for a formal occasion. To wear it to work, go easy on the hair gel and create a matte finish instead!
2. French Twist
This classic updo is not only quite fashionable to sport anywhere, but also quite sturdy (thanks to all the bobby pins that hold it together!) so that you can do just about anything without worrying about your hairstyle falling apart.
Wear this sohisticated updo to work, to a party, to a wedding, to the supermarket – you can never go wrong with a French twist!
3. Braided Headband with a Chignon
Braids are undergoing a revival these days; if you've been shying away from these interesting plaits all these years thinking that they're too old-school for you, now is the time to try them!
Create a middle-part and plait your face-framing hair on both sides to make two braids. Pull the braids backwards and merge them with a chignon at the nape of your neck or the back of your head.
You can create this Grecian updo in less than 10 minutes and rock it at casual and formal occasions.
4. Braided Bouffant Updo
Once you've gotten a hang of braids, you'd love to create a new plaited updo every day! Why not try a vintage hairstyle such as a braided bouffant updo and take your style to an all-new level!
To create a perfect braided bouffant, you must have medium-length hair. Make one regular 1" thick braid right on top of your ear. Spritz some high lift creation hairspray on the roots around your crown. This will boost your hair and prep it for the next step of creating a bouffant.
Use a fine toothed comb to back brush this hair section and build height and volume. Set the teased section by spritzing some bold control hairspray over it. Sweep your face framing tresses back to cover the teased hair; use the back of your comb to smooth out the bouffant and spritz some more hairspray to secure it in place.
To complete the updo, tie up your loose hair into a ponytail and wrap the braid around your head like a headband, securing it with bobby pins behind your ear on the opposite side.
The trick is to create a flawless bouffant, but once you've mastered the art, you can create this retro braided updo in a matter of minutes!
5. Updo with a Headband
Why settle for a regular updo when you can accessorize your hair in innovative ways and sport a new style every day! Headbands are in major trend these days and can be used to add a fun element to just about any hairstyle. In fact, we can't think of any place where you can't wear a headband!
To make your usual updo look interesting and different every day, just wear a headband that matches the color of your outfit! From sleek Alice bands to single or double braided elastic headbands and from thick sport bands to studded metallic circlets there's wide variety of options to choose from and wear!
6. Messy Chignon
If you're not a fan of intricate, picture-perfect hairstyles and would rather spend a few extra minutes catching some bonus sleep time rather than primping in front of the mirror sculpting your updo – the messy chignon is for you!
This quick and modern updo is perfect for a girl on the go! Spritz some tousle waves hairspray on your straight or wavy tresses and scrunch them with your fingers to add some extra texture before tying them up in an updo. Gently tug at hair pieces to create a slightly disheveled, runway inspired hairdo.
7. Messy Top Knot
Ideal for college and work, for running errands and weekend parties or for simply chilling at home, the messy top knot is the go-to hairstyle that every busy girl swears by!
The good thing about this casual updo is that you don't need to bother about having every strand in place. This intrinsically disheveled hairstyle gives you the freedom and peace of mind to go about your day without checking your hair every two minutes. Do tuck in a couple of extra bobby pins to secure your top knot – that's it and you're good to go!
8. Wet Look Top knot
Look chic and sophisticated and show your hair who's the boss by going for this slicked back updo. The wet look top knot looks great on all women, irrespective of their face shape and hair texture, and is best created with medium length to long tresses.
For best results, dab some high shine styling gel on your hair after you've tied your top knot. Spritz some fine control hairspray on your updo to set it for the day ... and night!
9. Vintage Long Bob
Who said you should always wear your long bob loose? Why not try something new and look different?
A vintage long bob updo is an interesting take on the usual bob styles and lends you a very charming appeal. You can create this updo with straight, wavy or curly hair and wear it to a formal or a casual event.
This updo is simpler to create than it looks. Roll under the ends of your hair and use bobby pins to secure them at the nape of your neck (or slightly higher) to create a classic retro updo! You can wear this hairdo with or without bangs.
If you have a long fringe, roll it on a thick-barreled curling iron to create a sweeping wavy effect (as shown in J. Lo's image above) and add a hint of romance to your hairstyle. Don't forget to spritz some heat protecctant hairspray on your tresses before rolling them on the curling iron!
Mist your hair with a generous spritz of hairspray to set your hairstyle for longer wear!
10. Textured Updo
Pair your straight or wavy ponytail with crimped hair or wear your curly bun with pin-straight bangs – there are many ways to create a textured updo. However, it is important to choose the right hairstyle that matches your face shape.
For example, if you have a round face, avoid crimping or curling your hair, as it will make your head look bigger. Go for textured long waves instead that'll frame your gorgeous face beautifully and smooth out a roundish jawline. However, if you have a long or oval face, crimps or braids mingled with straight or wavy hair sections will look great on you!
